LNWR Centre Frames

An arrangement of Centre Frames and associated third crank axle bearing was used by the LNWR on their locomotives with Joy Valve motion for thirty-five years.  Its removal from 1922 has long been controversial, being blamed by many for the severe problems with axle bearing failures and frame cracking that plagued the Prince of Wales and George the Fifth  classes.

With help from our friends at the LNWR Society, and careful review of published work we now have a much clearer history, and our conclusions may surprise some.  Read our flipbook for a short summary.
